Statue of Liberty turns 125 today, October 28, 2011. She was a gift from the people of France as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Construction graphics from Scientific American.
From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”Emma Lazarus, 1883
(Engraved on a bronze plaque, and mounted on the Statue of Liberty….lest we forget.)
